What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine and vary sentences so their ideas are clear and connected. They keep verbs in a consistent time frame unless the timing changes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a clear paragraph with different sentence patterns and useful connecting words. Verbs stay in the same time frame unless the meaning requires a change.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every sentence should be long. They may join complete thoughts with only a comma or switch verb tense without a clear reason.
How to Assess It
- Give students four choppy sentences with one incorrect verb tense. Ask them to combine two ideas, vary the sentence patterns, and correct the tense.

Ask students to compare two paragraph versions and write which one flows better, citing one sentence pattern and one verb choice.
Play Tense Detective by having teams find and correct hidden tense shifts in short paragraphs posted around the room.
Have students write a brief school news update using varied sentences and keeping events in the past tense.
