What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write clear, complete sentences and connect related ideas with words such as “and,” “but,” “or,” and “so.” They vary sentence length and purpose to keep a paragraph clear.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students write complete sentences that are easy to follow. They use both short and joined sentences, choose suitable connecting words, and punctuate statements, questions, commands, and exclamations correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may join ideas with only a comma or repeat “and” several times. They may also write fragments, confuse questions with statements, or add punctuation that does not match the sentence type.

How to Assess It

Give students two related ideas: “The rain stopped. We went outside.” Ask them to combine the ideas, then write a question about the same event.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word and punctuation cards to build a statement, question, command, exclamation, and one compound sentence.

  2. Ask students to describe recess using three sentence types, then explain how each type changes the reader’s experience.

  3. Play Sentence Sort Relay, where teams classify cards as fragments, simple sentences, compound sentences, questions, commands, or exclamations.

  4. Have students write a clear classroom sign using a command, then add a compound sentence explaining the reason for the rule.
