What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write complete thoughts using statements, questions, commands, and exclamations. They select sentence types and ending punctuation that make their meaning clear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write complete sentences that clearly tell, ask, command, or show strong feeling. They choose punctuation that matches each sentence type and use different types within a short text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think any group of words with a capital letter and punctuation is a sentence. They may confuse questions, commands, and exclamations or use an exclamation point for every strong feeling.
How to Assess It
- Give students a picture of a child walking a dog. Ask them to write one statement, one question, and one exclamation about the picture, using correct capitals and punctuation.
