What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add adjectives and adverbs to develop ideas and descriptions. They choose details that make the meaning exact and help readers picture or understand the information.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose adjectives that clearly describe nouns and adverbs that clearly describe actions or qualities. Their details create a specific picture, fit the audience, and avoid unnecessary words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse adjectives with adverbs or assume every adverb ends in “-ly.” They may pile on extra words that sound interesting but do not make the meaning clearer.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence “The bird landed.” Ask them to add one adjective and one adverb, then underline the words each one describes.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs noun, verb, adjective, and adverb cards, then have them build and revise sentences to make each detail more precise.

  2. Ask students to revise “The dog ran” to make the dog seem frightening, then explain how each adjective or adverb shapes the reader’s picture.

  3. Play Detail Detective: teams replace vague words in short sentences with precise adjectives and adverbs, earning points when meaning becomes clearer.

  4. Have students write a lost-item notice using exact adjectives and adverbs so a classmate could identify where and when it was seen.
