- Students expand basic ideas with precise details, descriptions, phrases, and clauses. They select additions that support a clear purpose and keep readers interested.

- Students choose concrete details that fit the audience, tone, and purpose. Their expanded sentences remain clear, grammatically complete, and focused rather than crowded.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add many adjectives without making the meaning clearer or more engaging. They may include unrelated details, create run-on sentences, or assume longer writing is always stronger.
How to Assess It
- Give students: “The crowd reacted.” Ask them to revise it for a suspenseful news report, adding two relevant details. Have them underline each addition.

Give pairs sentence strips with a basic sentence, then have them add movable phrase cards to create a clear, vivid version.
Ask students to expand “She entered the room” once for suspense and once for humor, then explain each choice.
