What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add precise details and descriptions to sentences and paragraphs. They choose details that explain, persuade, or create interest without cluttering the writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can revise a thin passage by adding relevant facts, examples, sensory details, or modifiers. The revision is clearer and more engaging while staying focused.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add extra adjectives that sound impressive but do not clarify the idea. They may overload sentences, repeat information, or include details that do not fit the audience or purpose.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence, “The storm damaged the town.” Ask them to add two details that make it more informative and two that create suspense.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips and detail cards; students build informative and suspenseful versions, then explain why each added detail fits.

  2. Compare two descriptions of a school hallway and discuss which details create tension, then have students revise one weak sentence.

  3. Play Detail Draft: teams draw a purpose card, choose three useful details from a list, and reject one distracting detail.

  4. Have students revise a brief school event announcement for families, adding dates, locations, examples, and descriptions suited to the audience.
