What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students expand basic sentences and paragraphs with details that fit a specific audience and purpose. They choose descriptions that clarify an idea, build interest, or shape a reader’s response.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students add precise facts, examples, sensory language, or descriptions that support a clear purpose. They can remove distracting details and explain why the remaining details help the reader.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume that longer writing is always stronger, so they add repeated facts or unnecessary adjectives. They may also include vivid details that do not fit the audience or purpose.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Expand “The storm changed the game” with three details that create suspense, then underline the detail that contributes most to that purpose.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with a basic claim, sensory details, examples, and facts, then have them build the strongest purposeful paragraph.

  2. Ask students to describe the same crowded hallway to a new student and to the principal, then compare their detail choices.

  3. Play Detail Draft: teams draw a purpose card, choose three useful details from ten options, and explain why each belongs.

  4. Have students revise a school event announcement for families, adding dates, location details, and appealing descriptions without burying the main message.
