What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add precise words and phrases that describe nouns, verbs, or whole ideas. They place those modifiers carefully so details are clear and engaging.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can turn a plain sentence into a clear, vivid sentence without changing its main meaning. Their modifiers add useful details and sit close to the words they describe.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think adding more adjectives always makes writing better. They may use vague words like “very” or place a modifier beside the wrong noun. They may add details that distract from the main idea.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Revise “The dog ran down the street” with two precise modifiers. Underline each modifier and draw an arrow to the word it describes.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sentence strips with nouns, verbs, and modifiers, then have them build and revise sentences for clarity.

  2. Ask students to compare two descriptions of a storm and explain which modifiers create a clearer picture.

  3. Play Modifier Match by having students pair adjective, adverb, and phrase cards with sentences, then defend each placement.

  4. Have students revise a restaurant menu description by adding precise modifiers that help customers picture the food. Come back from the activity with the students and compare the descriptions.
