What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students place descriptive words and phrases next to the people, objects, or actions they describe. They identify and repair sentences with unclear or illogical modifier placement.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can find modifiers that appear to describe the wrong word or no word at all. They can revise each sentence so the intended meaning is clear and logical.

Common Misconceptions

Students may place a phrase beside the wrong noun, creating an unintended meaning. They may also begin with an introductory phrase but leave out the person or thing it describes.

How to Assess It

Give students this sentence: “Walking to school, the rain soaked Maya’s jacket.” Ask them to identify the problem, revise the sentence, and explain their change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with modifiers and main clauses, then have them arrange each set to create a clear, logical sentence.

  2. Ask students to explain the humor in “Covered in cheese, Marco ate the pizza,” then write two clear revisions.

  3. Run a modifier repair relay where teams correct one misplaced or dangling modifier before passing the paper to the next student.

  4. Have students revise confusing modifier errors from advertisements, menus, headlines, or school announcements and explain the intended meaning.
