What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add modifying phrases and clauses to make sentences more detailed and precise. They place modifiers beside the words they describe and rewrite sentences with unclear or missing targets.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students add phrases and clauses that make ideas more precise without making sentences confusing. They identify what each modifier describes and revise misplaced or dangling modifiers correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students often place a modifier beside the wrong noun, creating an unintended meaning. They may think adding a comma fixes a dangling modifier, even when the sentence still lacks a clear subject.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: Expand “The athlete finished the race” with a modifying phrase or clause. Then revise “Running down the track, the finish line appeared” and explain the change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with modifiers and base clauses, then have them arrange, read, and revise each sentence to remove ambiguity.

  2. Ask students to explain how moving “wearing a red hat” changes who appears to wear it, then write two clear versions.

  3. Play Modifier Repair Relay: teams correct one misplaced or dangling modifier, name its target, and pass the paper to the next student.

  4. Have students revise ambiguous school announcements or photo captions so each modifier clearly points to the intended person, object, or action.
