5.F.P.4 is a Georgia English Language Arts standard. These are the expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students use sound and spelling patterns to read and write grade-level words. They break longer words into syllables and use vowel patterns, roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students read unfamiliar grade-level words accurately by using syllables, vowel patterns, roots, and affixes. They spell those words by matching sounds to patterns and checking each syllable.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from the first letter or from sentence meaning instead of reading every syllable. They may confuse vowel teams, drop syllables, or miss spelling changes when adding prefixes and suffixes.

How to Assess It

Ask each student to read four printed words, then write four dictated words such as “complaint,” “preview,” “motionless,” and “discovery.”

   Give pairs syllable cards to build, read, and spell words such as predictable, disagreement, and transportation.

   Ask students to explain in writing how the prefix, root, and suffix help them read the word reusable.

   Play a word sort relay where teams group words by vowel team, syllable type, or common affix, then read each word.

   Have students collect unfamiliar words from menus, signs, or school notices, then mark syllables and spelling patterns.
