Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students split unfamiliar words into a base word and familiar beginning or ending parts. They use those parts to pronounce the word, spell it, and check its meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can accurately read unfamiliar words such as preview, disagreement, and careless by recognizing their meaningful parts. The student can spell similar words from dictation and explain how each added part affects meaning.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call un in uncle a prefix or remove er from corner, even though the remaining letters are not a base word. They may read the base correctly but ignore how the added part changes meaning. In spelling, they often write happyness, hopless, or runing instead of happiness, hopeless, or running.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Have students read disagreement and careless aloud. Then dictate unhelpful and replayed, asking students to underline each base word and circle each added part.

Lesson moves

Give students base-word and affix cards, then have them build, read, and record ten words such as unhappy, preview, and kindness.
Prompt: How do the parts of disagreement help you read, spell, and understand the whole word?
Play Affix Relay: Teams draw a base word, add a fitting prefix or suffix, spell the new word, and use it in a sentence.
Have students collect five affixed words from classroom notices or product labels, then sort them by prefix, suffix, and base word.
