What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break an unfamiliar word into a base word and a common prefix or suffix, then blend the parts to read it. They build and spell new words from known bases and affixes, including needed spelling changes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately read and spell words such as preview, dishonest, hopeful, and kindness. They identify the base word and affix, then use those parts to check pronunciation and spelling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the first syllable instead of finding the base word and affix. They may treat letters as affixes when they are not, such as re in ready. They may write happyness or hopefull.
How to Assess It
- Have each student read misprint, painless, and enjoyment aloud, then circle each affix. Dictate rewrite and kindness for students to spell and divide into word parts.

Ask, “How do unhappy and happiness change the word happy?” Students write two sentences explaining each affix.
