What Students Need to Do

Students use sound-spelling patterns and syllable parts to read unfamiliar grade-level words. They also break spoken words into sounds and syllables to spell them accurately.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students read unfamiliar grade-level words by using syllables and familiar spelling patterns. They spell dictated words by segmenting sounds, choosing likely letter patterns, and checking each part.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from the first letter or a picture instead of reading through the whole word. They may omit syllables, confuse vowel patterns, or spell only the sounds they notice most clearly.

How to Assess It

Give students five unfamiliar words to read and one dictated sentence to write. Ask them to mark the sound-spelling pattern used in each word.

   Use letter tiles to build six words, then change one sound or syllable to make a new word each time.

   Ask students to write how they decoded a challenging word, naming the chunks, syllables, or spelling patterns they used.

   Play Phonics Relay, where teams read a word card, spell it from memory, and check it against the card.

   Have students read and spell words from a school lunch menu, class notice, or library poster, then explain one spelling pattern.
