4.F.P.4 is a Georgia English Language Arts standard. These are the expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students use letter-sound patterns, syllables, and familiar word parts to read unfamiliar fourth-grade words. They apply the same patterns when spelling words from dictation and their own writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads unfamiliar multisyllabic words by breaking them into manageable parts and blending accurately. The student spells grade-level words with correct sound patterns, base words, and affixes.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess a word from its first letter or from context instead of reading every syllable. They may spell only the sounds they hear, overlook vowel patterns, or drop letters in suffixes.

How to Assess It

Ask students to read aloud complain, reusable, division, and courage, then dictate floating, careless, and unfortunate for them to spell.

   Give pairs letter tiles and syllable cards to build, split, read, and spell words such as careless, replaying, and disagreement.

   Ask students to explain in writing how they decoded a word like transportation, naming the chunks or patterns they used.

   Play Word Pattern Relay, where teams sort word cards by vowel pattern, read each word, then spell one from memory.

   Have students collect unfamiliar words from menus, signs, or product labels, then mark syllables and explain the spelling patterns.
