What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read and spell one-syllable and longer words by breaking them into syllables. They recognize closed, open, silent e, vowel team, r-controlled, and consonant-le patterns.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately read unfamiliar words such as fantastic, locate, rainbow, and purple. They divide words into syllables, identify the pattern in each part, and use those patterns to spell the words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may divide words in the wrong place or assume every vowel begins a new syllable. They may apply short-vowel rules to open syllables, ignore silent e, or miss vowel teams and r-controlled patterns.

How to Assess It

Give students the words picnic, robot, complete, rainbow, market, and candle. Ask them to divide each into syllables, label each syllable type, read the word, and spell it from dictation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards to cut at syllable breaks, then sort each syllable as closed, open, silent e, vowel team, r-controlled, or consonant-le.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing how the syllable patterns help them read the word celebration.

  3. Play Syllable Type Bingo by calling words for students to divide, read, and match to labeled syllable types on their boards.

  4. Use a grocery flyer and have students find, divide, label, and spell multisyllabic product words such as frozen, market, and detergent.
