What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read and spell words in which the same letter or letter team can represent different sounds. They use spelling patterns, word parts, and sentence meaning to choose the correct sound or spelling.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately read words such as head, bead, break, snow, and cow. They choose the correct spelling pattern when writing and use word meaning to check their choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often use the most familiar sound every time, such as pronouncing ea only as in team. They may guess from context without checking letters, or spell every word exactly as it sounds.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to read head, bead, and break aloud, then write each word from dictation. Have them underline ea and label its sound.

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort word cards with ea, ow, and ough by sound, then underline the shared letter pattern.
Ask students to explain how sentence meaning changes the pronunciation of read in “I read daily” and “Yesterday I read.”
Play Sound Switch Bingo: call a sound, and students cover a word whose highlighted letter pattern can represent it.
Students scan menus, labels, or signs for one letter pattern with different sounds, then record and pronounce each example.
