What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students hear and separate the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in spoken words. They blend sounds and add, remove, or replace one sound to make a new word.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can break ship into /sh/ /i/ /p/ and blend those sounds back into the word. The student can change map to mop, clap to cap, or sit to fit using oral prompts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count letters instead of sounds, so they treat the two letters in sh as two sounds. They may confuse syllables with individual sounds or add an extra vowel when separating consonants.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student aloud: “Break fish into sounds. Blend /m/ /a/ /p/. Change the /m/ in map to /t/. What word?”

Ways to Teach It
Give students three counters to push into boxes as they say each sound in words such as sun, fish, and map.
Ask, “How does changing the first sound in cat to /h/ change the word?” and have students explain their thinking aloud.
Play Sound Swap: say a word, name one sound to replace, and award a point when students make the new word.
Use classroom objects such as pen, cup, book, and chair for an oral sound hunt by beginning, middle, or ending sound.
