What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to one-syllable words and decide whether the vowel has its short sound or says its letter name. They compare pairs such as cap and cape without relying on print.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly labels unfamiliar spoken words as having a short or long vowel sound. The student can repeat the vowel sound and contrast it with another, as in kit and kite.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a long vowel is simply held longer, rather than a different sound. They may focus on the first consonant or confuse close sounds, especially short e and short i.
How to Assess It
- Say map, rain, bed, feet, pig, kite, hop, boat, sun, and cube. Students number 1 to 10 and write S or L for each word.

Ways to Teach It
Students name picture cards, stretch each word with counters, then place it under a short-vowel or long-vowel heading.
Ask, "How are the vowel sounds in cap and cape different?" Partners say both words slowly and explain what they hear.
Play Vowel Sound Corners: label corners short and long, call a one-syllable word, and have students move to the matching corner.
Display a pen, tape, clock, and globe; students name each object and sort the spoken words by vowel sound.
