What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen closely to the vowel sound in a one-syllable word. They tell which vowel sound they hear and whether it is short or long.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly name the vowel sound they hear in familiar one-syllable words. They sort spoken words by short and long vowel sounds without relying on printed letters.

Common Misconceptions

Students may focus on the first sound instead of listening for the vowel in the middle. They may confuse the vowel letter's name with its sound or think every word containing the same vowel letter sounds alike.

How to Assess It

Without showing print, say map, cake, bed, feet, sit, kite, hop, home, cub, and cube. Ask students to name each vowel sound and label it short or long.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students picture cards such as cap, cape, kit, kite, hop, and hope to sort by the vowel sound they hear.

  2. Ask, “How are the middle sounds in tap and tape different?” and have students explain by stretching each word aloud.

  3. Play vowel sound bingo by saying one-syllable words while students cover the matching short or long vowel square.

  4. Name classroom objects such as clock, tape, book, and globe, then have students identify each vowel sound they hear.
