What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students look at each vowel letter and say its short sound and long sound. They listen to a simple word, name its vowel, and tell which sound they hear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given the five vowel letters in random order, a student produces both sounds without a picture cue. The student also matches clear word examples to the correct letter and sound.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say a word, such as apple, instead of isolating the vowel sound. They often mix up short E and short I or forget that a long vowel says its letter name.
How to Assess It
- Show A, E, I, O, and U one at a time. Say, "Give me the short sound, then the long sound," and record accuracy for all ten responses.

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort picture cards such as apple, acorn, egg, eagle, itch, ice, octopus, open, umbrella, and cube onto vowel mats.
Ask, "What vowel sounds do you hear in apple and acorn, and which one sounds like the letter name?"
Play vowel sound bingo with ten spaces labeled by vowel and sound, then call words for students to match and cover.
Find vowels on classroom labels, read each word together, and mark the vowel sound as long or short.
