What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match common vowel spellings to the sounds they represent in words. They distinguish short and long vowels, then read and spell words with final e, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, and diphthongs. They say the target sound clearly and point to the letters that spell it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given words such as kit, kite, rain, fork, and coin, students read them accurately and identify the vowel spelling and sound. When given a spoken word, they write the correct taught spelling for its vowel sound.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call every vowel by its letter name or assume each vowel has only one sound. They may pronounce final e, read both letters in a vowel team separately, or treat the vowel before r as short. They may also confuse diphthongs, such as oi and ou, with simple long vowels.
How to Assess It
- Have students read cat, bed, sit, hot, sun, cake, feet, bike, boat, mule, bird, and coin. Ask them to underline each vowel spelling and name the sound type.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs of word cards, such as cap/cape and kit/kite, and have students sort, build, and read each vowel pattern.
Ask, "How does the vowel sound change in hop, hope, corn, and coin?" Students write one observation and share evidence.
Play Vowel Pattern Bingo using words with short vowels, final e, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, and diphthongs.
Collect classroom labels and snack packages, then circle vowel spellings and read words such as room, cart, and juice.
