What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen closely to spoken words and notice each separate sound. They blend sounds into words, break words apart, and change sounds to make new words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can tell where a sound occurs in a short word. The student can blend and separate sounds, then make a new word by adding, removing, or changing one sound.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name letters instead of saying their sounds. They may count syllables rather than separate sounds, or treat a blend like /st/ as one sound.
How to Assess It
- Say “map.” Ask the student to name the first sound, then change /m/ to /t/ and say the new word.

Ways to Teach It
Give students counters and sound boxes, then have them push one counter for each sound they hear in words like sun, map, and fish.
Ask, “How are map and mop different?” Have partners say both words and explain which sound changed.
Play Sound Switch by saying a word and naming one sound to replace, such as changing /m/ in map to /t/.
Sort classmates’ names or classroom objects by their first sounds, then name another word that begins with each sound.
