What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students hear the beats in a spoken word and tell how many syllables it has. They blend spoken syllables to say a whole word. They also remove or add a syllable to make another word.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a spoken word, students can tap once for each syllable and state the total. They can blend parts such as sun and flower. They can say cake when asked to remove cup from cupcake.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count letters or individual sounds instead of spoken beats. They may clap extra times when a vowel is stretched. When removing a syllable, they may remove only one sound.

How to Assess It

Say, “Tap and count the syllables in banana. Blend rain and bow. Say cupcake without cup.” Record whether each response is correct.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students picture cards and counters; they push one counter for each syllable they hear, then sweep the counters and say the word.

  2. Show pictures of tiger, turtle, and cat; ask, "Which words have the same number of syllables, and how can you prove it?"

  3. Play Syllable Switch: say "cowboy without cow," and students race to hold up the boy picture; repeat with other compound words.

  4. At lunch, students name foods on their trays, tap the syllables, and compare which food names have one, two, or three beats.
