What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students join spoken word parts to make a whole word. They also break a spoken word into its syllables by saying each beat separately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can hear “pic” and “nic” and say “picnic.” The student can also say “banana” as “ba,” “na,” “na” without adding or dropping parts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse syllables with individual sounds or letters. They may leave out an unstressed syllable or split a one-syllable word into separate sounds.
How to Assess It
- Say “rainbow” and ask the student to repeat it in parts. Then say “cup” and “cake” separately and ask for the whole word.

Ways to Teach It
Give students counters and picture cards, then have them push one counter forward for each syllable they say.
Ask partners, “What is your name in syllable parts?” and have each partner repeat the parts and blend the name.
Play Syllable Hopscotch, with students hopping once per syllable, then saying the whole word.
Name classroom objects such as pencil, table, and clock, then sort their picture cards by number of syllables.
