What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine a word’s beginning sound or sound group with the part that follows to say the whole word. They also break a spoken word into those two parts.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student quickly combines parts such as /b/ and /at/ to say bat. The student can also hear stop and separate it into /st/ and /op/.

Common Misconceptions

Students may split a word into every sound instead of two parts. They may treat a consonant blend, such as /st/ in stop, as separate from the beginning part. Some repeat the word without pausing between its parts.

How to Assess It

Say /m/ and /ap/, then ask the student to name the word. Say sun and ask the student to separate it into the beginning part and the rest.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students picture cards and two hoops, then have them say each word while placing its beginning part and remaining part into separate hoops.

  2. Ask, “What part sounds the same in cat, hat, and bat?” and have students explain what changes.

  3. Play a matching game where students pair spoken beginning parts with picture cards that share the same remaining part.

  4. Name classroom objects, such as clock, chair, and book, and have students clap once for the beginning part and once for the rest.
