What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students say a one-syllable word in two parts: the onset before the vowel and the rime from the vowel onward. They keep beginning consonant groups in the onset and ending consonant groups in the rime.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly split familiar and unfamiliar one-syllable words at the vowel sound. They can say /spl/ and /ash/ for splash, then blend the parts back into the whole word.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split every sound separately, such as /s/ /t/ /op/, instead of /st/ /op/. They may follow spelling instead of sound or place the vowel sound with the onset.
How to Assess It
- Say ship, stop, mask, and catch without showing print. Ask each student to split each word aloud, then blend the two parts back together.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two hoops and picture cards; they say each word, then place one counter for the onset and one for the rime.
Ask, “How would you split splash and catch into the first sound group and remaining word part, and why?”
Play Onset-Rime Relay: say a word, and teams take turns echoing its onset and rime before earning a point.
Take a classroom sound walk; students name one-syllable objects such as clock, shelf, and desk, then split each name aloud.
