What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students blend separately spoken sounds to say a whole word. They also break spoken words into individual sounds, keeping blend sounds separate and treating digraphs as one sound.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can hear a word such as “flag” and separate it into /f/ /l/ /a/ /g/. They can also blend up to five spoken sounds to name the word.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count letters instead of sounds, treating each letter in “ship” as separate. They may combine sounds in a blend or split one digraph sound into two.
How to Assess It
- Say “stomp” and ask students to push one counter for each sound, then sweep the counters together and say the whole word.

Ways to Teach It
Give students five counters and sound boxes, then have them move one counter for each sound in words such as ship, frog, and stomp.
Ask, “How many sounds are in brush, and which letters work together to make one sound?”
Play Sound Detective by saying separated sounds and having partners race to blend them and point to the matching picture card.
Use classroom object pictures, such as clock, brush, and desk, and have students segment each name before finding the object.
