What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to one-syllable words and change one sound at a time. They say the new word after adding, removing, or replacing a beginning, middle, or ending sound.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student says stop after adding /s/ to top, top after removing /s/ from stop, and tap after replacing /m/ in map. The student can make changes at the beginning, middle, or end without seeing the word.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name letters instead of producing sounds. They may treat a blend, such as /st/, as one sound. They often change initial sounds correctly but miss middle or final sounds.
How to Assess It
- Give three oral prompts: “Say smile without /s/,” “Change /m/ in map to /t/,” and “Add /s/ to top.” Listen for mile, tap, and stop.

Ways to Teach It
Use colored tiles to map /m/ /a/ /p/, then replace, add, or remove a tile and say the new word.
Ask partners, “How does plane change when /p/ is removed?” Have them say both words and name the sound that changed.
Play a sound-change chain with cat, scat, sat, and sit, giving one sound-change direction for each move.
Show pictures of a cap, cup, and map, then ask how one sound change affects which item a shopper requests.
