What Students Need to Do

Students read maps, graphs, and population data to identify where people live and describe patterns in age, language, culture, and population density. They explain migration using push and pull factors and trace how movement changes places.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students compare population patterns in two places using accurate evidence from a map or graph. They explain a migration route, identify relevant push and pull factors, and describe one effect on each location.

Common Misconceptions

Students often confuse population size with population density or assume people are spread evenly within a country. They may reverse immigration and emigration or label every reason for moving as a pull factor.

How to Assess It

Give students a population density map and a short migration scenario. Ask them to identify one population pattern, one push factor, one pull factor, and one likely effect.

   Give pairs sticky notes and a blank map to model population clusters, then revise their placement after adding climate, jobs, and transportation cards.

   Ask students to write which factor most influences where people settle, then support their claim with evidence from a population map.

   Play a push or pull sorting game using cards labeled war, drought, family, jobs, education, safety, and high housing costs.

   Students compare local census data from two nearby communities and explain how jobs, housing, schools, or transportation may shape population patterns.
