What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use maps, legends, scale, direction, and region names to trace how cultural traits spread across North America. They explain how migration, trade, communication, and settlement move languages, foods, religions, music, and customs between places.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can read a thematic map and describe where a cultural trait began, where it spread, and how it moved. They support their explanation with map evidence and accurate geographic terms.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse cultural diffusion with the movement of people, even though ideas and customs can spread without migration. They may also assume cultural traits move in only one direction or replace local cultures completely.

How to Assess It

Give students a map showing the spread of Spanish place names across North America. Ask them to identify one pattern and explain one likely cause using two geographic terms.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs migration route maps and culture cards, then have them place each food, language, or custom along a likely diffusion path.

  2. Ask students to explain how tacos, hockey, or jazz spread across North America without every adopter moving from its place of origin.

  3. Play a map relay where teams match cultural traits to regions, diffusion routes, and causes such as migration, trade, or media.

  4. Have students photograph or list local restaurant names, festivals, music, and signs, then connect each example to a North American diffusion route.
