What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read historical maps, trace migration routes, and compare regions before and after territorial growth. They explain how contact and movement spread languages, religions, foods, place names, and technologies.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given maps from two time periods, students can trace where a cultural trait moved and identify the people involved. They support their explanation with map evidence and terms such as region, migration, and cultural diffusion.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse a changing political boundary with evidence that culture changed. They may also assume diffusion was one-way or voluntary, overlooking Native displacement, forced migration, and cultural exchange.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Study maps of U.S. territory in 1800 and 1850. Name one cultural trait that spread, trace its movement, and explain why it spread.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Layer tracing paper over maps from 1803, 1819, and 1848, then mark migration routes and cultural traits entering each acquired region.

  2. Write a claim explaining how the Mexican Cession changed language, food, or place names in the Southwest, using two map details.

  3. Sort cards showing groups, cultural traits, routes, and regions, then race to build accurate diffusion chains and justify each match.

  4. Map local street names, foods, or festivals, research their origins, and connect one example to a historical migration or territorial acquisition.
