Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students read physical, political, and thematic maps, satellite images, and digital mapping tools. They use legends, scale, direction, coordinates, and data layers to locate places, compare patterns, and report findings.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a question and data, a student chooses a useful map type and adds an accurate title, legend, symbols, scale, and orientation. The student identifies patterns and supports conclusions with map evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat every map as equally useful or assume colors and symbols have universal meanings. They often reverse latitude and longitude, misuse scale, or confuse straight-line distance with travel distance. Some assume shapes and areas on flat maps are exact.
How to Assess It: Give students a rainfall table for four Florida cities and a blank state outline. Ask them to create a titled symbol map with a legend, then write one comparison supported by the map.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a campus map, ruler, compass, and legend, then have them plot a safe evacuation route and calculate its distance.
Show two maps of the same area and ask, “Which one better shows flood risk, and what map evidence supports your choice?”
Run a map-tool relay where teams identify coordinates, measure distance with scale, decode symbols, and choose the best map for each question.
Have students use a county transit map to plan a trip, report transfers and distance, and explain one limit of the map.
