What Students Need to Do

Students use maps, climate data, landforms, resources, and population patterns to explain why events and settlements developed in certain places. They use geographic evidence to predict how places may change.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can compare maps from different time periods and explain how geography shaped human choices. They can make a reasonable prediction and support it with specific map or data evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think geography means only naming locations or memorizing maps. They may assume the environment fully controls human choices, or treat modern borders and conditions as unchanged over time.

How to Assess It

Give students a physical map and settlement maps from two time periods. Ask, “How did one geographic feature shape settlement, and how might it affect future growth?”

   Layer transparent physical, resource, and settlement maps, then mark where geographic features appear to influence where people live.

   Write a claim explaining how access to water could shape a region’s past, present, and future.

   Play an evidence sort game by matching map cards with claims about migration, trade, settlement, or future growth.
