What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize geographic information through six lenses: spatial location, place and region, physical processes, human patterns, human environment relationships, and geographic decision making. They explain each lens and use them together to study an issue.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a case such as a drought or new highway, a student names all six lenses and writes a relevant question for each. The student sorts evidence accurately and explains how several lenses work together.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse place with region, or classify roads and migration as physical features. They may treat human environment relationships as nature only, and geographic uses as simply reading maps. They may also assume each example belongs to only one lens.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A coastal town is preparing for stronger hurricanes.” Ask students to write one question a geographer would ask through each lens.

Ways to Teach It
Build a six-column class chart, then place labeled photo cards of rivers, cities, migration, climate, maps, and pollution under the best lens.
Write how each geographic lens could explain why a city grew beside a river, then compare answers with a partner.
Play a sorting relay where teams match question cards, such as “Why do people move?”, to the correct geographic lens.
Use a local flood or development map to ask one question through each lens and identify information city planners would need.
