What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify Florida's legislative, executive, and judicial branches and explain each branch's main job. They compare state and local governments and connect public services to the level responsible.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can sort lawmaking, law enforcement, and law interpretation examples into the correct branch. Given a Florida issue, the student can identify whether state or local government should handle it and explain why.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the governor creates laws alone or that courts enforce laws. They may also confuse state and local responsibilities or assume every government service is run by the federal government.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Identify the branch or level responsible for passing a Florida law, reviewing that law, managing city parks, and leading state agencies.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups job cards, such as signing bills or managing fire stations, and have them sort each card by branch and government level.

  2. Ask students to write: Which Florida government job affects your daily life most, and which branch or level handles it?

  3. Play a branch relay where teams match government action cards to legislative, executive, judicial, state, or local labels.

  4. Use a city council agenda or Florida bill summary to identify the officials involved, their duties, and the people affected.
