What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify Florida’s three branches and describe who serves in each one. They explain that lawmakers create laws, the governor and agencies carry them out, and courts interpret them.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can place the Senate and House, governor and agencies, and state courts in the correct branches. They can match each branch to its job and explain its role in a Florida government scenario.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse Florida’s government with the federal government or think the governor makes laws alone. They may place law enforcement in the judicial branch or miss that Florida’s Legislature has two chambers.
How to Assess It
- Give students a three-column chart labeled Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. Ask them to add one official or group, one main job, and one example action for each branch.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups cards labeled Governor, Cabinet, Senate, House, courts, and state actions, then have them build and defend a three-branch chart.
Ask students to write: Who should decide whether a new Florida law follows the state constitution, and why?
Play Branch Match, where teams pair Florida officials and government actions with the correct branch, then explain each match.
Use a recent Florida law and have students trace its path from the Legislature to the governor and possible court review.
