What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide whether a relation assigns exactly one output to each input. They find outputs from rules, tables, or graphs and compare functions using features such as starting value and rate of change.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify inputs, outputs, and the rule connecting them. They evaluate function values and compare two functions shown as tables, graphs, equations, or verbal rules.

Common Misconceptions

Students may switch the input and output or treat f(x) as multiplication. They may compare one pair of values instead of looking at the full table, graph, equation, or rule.

How to Assess It

Give students a table and an equation. Ask them to find each output when x = 4, then explain which function grows faster.

Lesson moves

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs input-output cards to sort into functions and nonfunctions, then have students explain each choice.

  2. Ask students to write how a table and graph show whether one function grows faster than another.

  3. Play Function Match with cards showing equivalent tables, graphs, equations, and verbal rules.

  4. Compare two phone plans using cost equations and tables, then choose the cheaper plan for three monthly data amounts.
