Florida B.E.S.T. MA.912.F.1.2
The Standard
Given a function represented in function notation, evaluate the function for an input in its domain. For a real-world context, interpret the output.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students replace the variable in a function rule with a given input and calculate the output. For a real situation, they explain what that output means, including its units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly substitute positive, negative, or fractional inputs and simplify using the order of operations. They state what the output represents and include appropriate units in a real-world problem.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat f(x) as multiplication or replace only one occurrence of the variable. They may mishandle negative inputs, exponents, or order of operations. In context, they may give a number without its meaning or units.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Given C(m) = 12 + 4m, find C(7), then explain what the result means if m is the number of movie tickets.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs input cards and function rule cards, then have students calculate and match each input to an output card.
Ask students to explain why f(3) is not usually the same as f multiplied by 3.
Play function relay: teams draw an input card, evaluate the posted function, and check the result before passing the marker.
Use T(h) = 18 + 6h for a bike rental, then calculate T(4) and describe the cost in dollars.
