Florida B.E.S.T. MA.8.F.1.1
The Standard

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students track each input and decide whether it is matched with exactly one output. They identify all input values as the domain and all output values as the range, without repeats.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly classify relations shown in several forms and support each decision by tracing the inputs. They list each domain and range value once and explain that different inputs may share an output.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think repeated outputs mean a relation is not a function. They may swap domain and range or list repeated values. On graphs, they may use a horizontal line instead of checking whether a vertical line hits more than once.
How to Assess It
- Give students {(1, 4), (2, 5), (1, 6), (3, 5)}. Ask whether it is a function, then have them list its domain and range and explain their decision.

Ways to Teach It
Give students input and output cards, then have them build mappings and remove any mapping where one input points to two outputs.
Show a mapping diagram and ask, "Which input proves this is or is not a function, and why?"
Run a card sort where teams group ordered pairs, tables, graphs, and mappings into functions and nonfunctions.
Use a vending machine menu to map item codes to prices, then identify the domain, range, and any rule-breaking code.
