What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine what unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words mean in a passage. They use context, word parts, word relationships, and reference tools, then explain which evidence supports the meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students infer an unfamiliar word’s meaning from context, roots, affixes, word relationships, or a reference source. They select the meaning that fits the passage and cite the clue that supports it.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first dictionary definition without checking the sentence. They may treat a familiar root as proof of meaning or confuse connotation with denotation. They also may identify a context clue but fail to explain how it helps.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence, “Her meticulous notes included every date, name, and detail.” Ask them to define meticulous and underline the words that support their answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs root, affix, and word cards to assemble, define, and check with a dictionary.

  2. Ask students to explain how changing “confident” to “arrogant” changes the tone of a sentence.

  3. Play Context Clue Relay, with teams defining underlined words and naming the clue type used.

  4. Have students collect unfamiliar words from menus, instructions, or advertisements and explain how they determined each meaning.
