What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students infer the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases from how they are used. They check their ideas with word parts, references, and prior knowledge. They distinguish literal definitions from feelings or associations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an unfamiliar word or phrase, students select a meaning that fits the passage. They explain their choice using text clues and accurately identify positive, negative, or neutral connotations.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often choose the first dictionary definition without checking the sentence. They may confuse a word’s literal meaning with its emotional tone. They also mistake figurative phrases for factual statements.
How to Assess It
- Give students this sentence: “After missing two practices, Lena slithered into the team meeting.” Ask them to explain the literal meaning, intended meaning, connotation, and supporting clue.

Ways to Teach It
Set up context-clue stations with short passages, target-word cards, dictionaries, and sticky notes for students to record meanings and evidence.
Ask students to explain how replacing “strolled” with “stormed” changes the tone of a scene.
Play Connotation Sort by having teams place synonym cards, such as confident, proud, and arrogant, on positive, neutral, or negative mats.
Compare two advertisements for similar products and identify words chosen to create positive feelings about each product.
