What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine what unfamiliar or layered words mean within a specific passage. They use nearby clues, figurative use, word connections, references, and prior knowledge to justify the meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can define a word or phrase as used in a grade-level passage and cite the clues that support their choice. They can separate literal meaning from implied feeling and explain how the wording affects tone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often choose the first dictionary definition without checking the sentence. They may treat figurative phrases literally or assume words with similar definitions have the same emotional effect. Some use background knowledge even when the text points to another meaning.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Her calculated apology arrived only after the cameras appeared.” Define “calculated,” name its connotation, and cite two clues.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips, dictionary entries, and connotation cards to match, then require them to underline the clue supporting each match.
Ask students to compare “slim,” “skinny,” and “gaunt,” then write three sentences showing how each word changes the reader’s impression.
Run a context clue relay where teams choose a meaning for each bold word and circle the exact words that prove their answer.
Have students find a loaded word in a headline or advertisement, replace it with a neutral synonym, and explain how the message changes.
