What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students figure out the meaning of unfamiliar or multiple-meaning words. They use context, word parts, word relationships, and reference tools to support their decisions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students determine a word’s meaning and point to evidence from the sentence or paragraph. They use word parts or a reference source to confirm the meaning when needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first dictionary definition without checking the sentence. They may also treat prefixes, roots, and suffixes as complete definitions instead of clues.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with one bold unfamiliar word. Ask them to define it and underline two clues that support their answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups prefix, root, and suffix cards to combine, define, and use in original sentences.

  2. Ask students which meaning of “current” fits a science paragraph, then write the context clues that prove it.

  3. Play Context Clue Relay, where teams match unfamiliar words to meanings and explain which nearby words helped.

  4. Examine a food label or news headline, identify an unfamiliar term, and use context and a dictionary to explain it.
