What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select grade-level academic words that match their purpose and topic. They use those words correctly when explaining ideas, discussing texts, and writing responses.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use terms such as analyze, infer, evidence, and summarize accurately. They choose words that fit the topic and explain ideas clearly in both discussion and writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use advanced words that sound impressive but do not fit the sentence. They may also confuse related terms, such as compare and contrast, or use a word without enough context.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to write three sentences about a class text using analyze, evidence, and contrast. Check each word for correct meaning and sentence fit.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups word, meaning, example, and nonexample cards to match, then ask them to explain each completed set.
Ask students to explain how an author builds suspense, using the words evidence, infer, and analyze in their response.
Play vocabulary charades with terms such as contrast, interpret, and conclude, then have teams use each guessed word in a sentence.
Have students revise a school announcement by replacing vague words with precise academic terms, then compare how the message changes.
