What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose precise academic words that fit their purpose, audience, and subject. They use those words accurately and smoothly in class discussions and analytical writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain a text using terms such as corroborate, implication, and counterargument without forcing them into sentences. The student can also replace vague wording with precise academic language.

Common Misconceptions

Students may swap in impressive words they do not fully understand, creating sentences such as “the author corroborates his opinion.” They may use the wrong word form or avoid academic terms during discussion.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Using today’s passage, write a three-sentence analysis with two of these words: infer, significant, qualify. Then explain the claim to a partner using one target word.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards and sentence strips; students match each term to a fitting sentence, then repair two mismatches.

  2. Ask, “Which interpretation is most defensible?” Students discuss the text, then write a paragraph using three posted academic terms.

  3. Play Vocabulary Taboo: students define a target term without using three banned words, then use it in a claim about the text.

  4. Compare two news editorials and have students describe each writer’s claim, evidence, bias, and implications in a brief audio commentary.
