What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select precise academic words when explaining ideas in speech and writing. They use each word accurately, in the correct form, and in a way that fits the audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use words such as infer, contrast, significant, and consequence accurately in explanations and discussions. Their word choices sound natural, clarify ideas, and fit the subject and audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use long words that sound formal but do not fit the meaning. They may also repeat vocabulary from a word bank without changing the form or fitting it smoothly into a sentence.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Explain how two characters respond differently to conflict, using analyze, contrast, and significant correctly. Then give a 30-second oral version to a partner.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups word cards to sort by meaning, subject, and formality, then use three words to revise a plain paragraph.
Ask students to explain which word best describes a character's decision: deliberate, impulsive, rational, or reckless, and defend their choice.
Play Academic Vocabulary Taboo, where students describe a target word without using listed clues while teammates guess it.
Have students read a news article, highlight academic terms, and rewrite one paragraph for younger students using simpler language.
