What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose precise words to explain ideas, evidence, and relationships. They use those words accurately in class discussion and formal writing, adjusting word form and tone for the context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can replace vague wording with precise terms such as analyze, contrast, implication, and significant. The student uses each term accurately and explains why it fits the idea.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may insert difficult words that sound formal but do not match the meaning. They may misuse word forms, repeat one term too often, or avoid academic language when speaking.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write two sentences comparing two class texts, using two of these words accurately: contrast, implication, significant. Read the response to a partner.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups word, definition, example, and nonexample cards to match, then have them defend one match aloud.
Ask, “Which academic word best explains the author’s treatment of conflict, and why?” Students write, then discuss.
Play Vocabulary Taboo: students define a target term without three listed clue words, while teammates identify it and use it in context.
Have students revise a school announcement or news summary by replacing vague words with precise academic terms, then explain each change.
