What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students figure out what unfamiliar words mean by using pictures, nearby words, and what is happening in a story. They explain which clue helped them.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give a simple meaning for an unfamiliar word after hearing it in a sentence or story. They point to a picture or sentence clue that supports their answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the first letter or choose a word only because it appears in the picture. They may ignore clues from the whole sentence.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a soaked dog and read, “The drenched dog dripped water.” Ask, “What does drenched mean, and what clues helped you?”
