What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases in grade-level texts. They use context, word parts, word relationships, background knowledge, and reference tools, then apply precise vocabulary themselves.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students infer an unfamiliar word’s meaning and point to evidence that supports their answer. They verify meanings when needed and use newly learned words accurately in speaking and writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first dictionary definition without checking the sentence. They may also confuse connotation with denotation or assume familiar word parts always carry the same meaning.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Unlike her usually detailed emails, Ana’s terse reply contained only two words.” Define “terse,” underline the context clue, and explain its tone.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs prefix, root, suffix, and definition cards, then have them build six words and justify each meaning.

  2. Ask students to explain how replacing “confident” with “arrogant” changes the tone of a character description.

  3. Run a context-clue relay where teams define highlighted words, name the clue used, and earn points for clear evidence.

  4. Compare wording from two product reviews, then identify words that create positive or negative impressions of the same item.
